Small Things

A short story about connecting more to the world. Happy reading!

Steven Larsen, a lad of 22, works in an IT company named Forx. Being recently promoted to ‘Dy. Sales Manager’ he is very enthusiastic to work. His entire day goes quite tiring and busy so he sleeps early by 11pm.

Like any other day, today had the same beginning. Getting up at 5 am, go to gym, back home, shower, breakfast and then to work. Before leaving home he checked all essential stuffs – his bag, wrist watch, headphones and of course the cell phone. He reaches bus stop by 8:30 am everyday. The half hour in bus is spent just browsing on internet or social media. Till reaching the office and starting work it is almost 9:15 am.

The end of the day was a little different. Steven wrapped up at work and left for the bus stop at 6 pm. On reaching, he took out his cell phone and got the worst notification, ‘5% battery. Please connect to charger’. Steven forgot his power bank at home. He had no option just to sit idle in half hour journey.

Suddenly someone called him. “Hey Steven, would you like to travel to home together?”

Steven looked back and saw a healthy man of 40s, a plum face which had very small eyes and a big welcoming smile. Steven recognised him as his boss.

“Today there was less work so I ended it up soon. Let’s head home together”

“Sure sir, I’d be happy to. But sir where’s your car today? Didn’t it come to drive you home?” Steven said with a shrug.

“No no nothing like that. I gave holiday to the driver and sent the car back. I wanted to go by bus today. I remember when I was young these buses were very important part of my life. Oh those old days haha!” Boss exclaimed gaily.

“That seems good sir. I’ll be glad to have your company today”

“Oh it’s good to have a fellow along as well!”

They both stood at the bus stop waiting for the bus to arrive. They paused for a while and continued the conversation.

“You see that Steven, these buildings didn’t change much all these years..just a little different colour. Ten years ago same like you I used to travel by buses daily. This was my favourite part of the day, waiting for the bus and gazing at that”

Boss pointed towards the building. Steven was amazing red sky, remnants of the day, it was the sunset. He was surprised to see it.

“You must enjoy these sunsets daily right? After all this is your everyday route in evening.”

“No sir.. actually I mean.. this is very pretty” Steven stammered a bit

“Why? Don’t you like the sunsets?” Boss questioned thoughtfully

“No sir, I do. Actually at this point of time I am with my phone browsing or checking social media”

“So what about today? I didn’t find you with the device when I came here”

“Sir actually out of battery. I didn’t bring my power bank today”

Boss smiled. He pat on his shoulders and said, “You know what lad, I never owned a power bank as a backup to those ‘battery low’ notifications”

“Uh.. why sir? They are useful” Steven spoke thinking the reason for this

“No Steven, they take away a lot from us”

“But sir, how can a simple charging device take anything from us?” Steven asked thoughtfully.

“Did you ever saw the sunset before?”

“Um.. honestly, no sir”

“Why? Because you were immersed into these devices” Boss smiled a bit and then continued

“This is the main reason phones have batteries Steven. That is the limit. It is to tell you just don’t stick with them anymore for the day. Enjoy the stuff around. You can talk to the regular travellers of same route or you can stare at the sky. I’ve seen many people spending nights on the phones and not giving time to family. I agree social media is good till an extent, but we shouldn’t be much obsessed with them. Those follows or likes on the post don’t define if you are a good or bad person. It simply doesn’t define anything! Your real life personality is more important than any social media profile. Learn to enjoy small things lad, they give big happiness.”

They both smiled. The bus arrived. With the image of lovely red sky and wise words in his mind Steven took his seat and enjoyed small talk with his boss while he reached home. The starting of the day was same but the ending was unlike, just filled with a bit of aesthetic aura..

A short story of a mysterious creature from ‘Peace’ planet..

Welcome back readers, it’s been months posting something. Here’s a very short story I wrote a while back in school. Happy reading 🙂

Call her Elet, an extremely unique creature. Elet belongs to a Peace planet. While working on her spacecraft, she accidentally left her hand in zero gravity and came to atmosphere of earth to which she was quite close.

Elet and creatures of peace planet had a slender blue body with an oval face. Big large eyes and small lip-less mouth formed features of their faces. They all were small in height around 4 ft tall. They did not die due to aging or health diseases. Whenever someone praised them, (they helped others) their skin renewed. And when someone criticised them a scale of their skin shed off.  So in this peace planet only kind and helpful ones lived and all of them had a grateful feeling towards each other.

When Elet came to earth the planet felt somewhat like the peace planet itself. It was beautiful, but a lil less beautiful. She saw new things. Most astonishing was long structures in which unknown creatures lived, which today we call buildings.

Elet went further and saw a small puppy. It was reaching for some leftover food near dustbin. Elet picked up the food and pat the little puppy and fed it. The very moment one scale of her skin glowed blue and renewed. Elet smiled..

A newspaper boy threw newspaper on the doorstep of nearby house. Elet was surprised to see something like that. She ran and picked it up. Suddenly the door opened and one creature, looking at Elet, began to scream at her. She just kept staring at the human figure which spoke, ” Ey! Who are you!? What kind of attire have you wore! Don’t steal my newspaper you thief!” And then Elet saw a small scale of her skin shed off

Elet tried to speak to one of them. She first approached an old man who, at first sight, got frightened seeing her face and spoke something abusing. Elet wasn’t able to understand what he said but one more scale of her skin shed off

Elet came to a small garden. This was because this hardly ever happened with her on peace planet. Two scales shed off in one day was a very tragic thing for her.

She unknowingly came to the garden of a grumpy rich man who allowed no one in his beautiful garden. It was evening time and Elet was sitting on the bench. The grumpy rich owner came for a round in his garden. Seeing an intruder he became very angry. He picked up a stick and started shouting on her. She was already sad and now she became very frightened. She ran away as one more scale shed off her skin.

Elet didn’t knew if she was able to live long in such a planet. And as her expectation, in few days she could see her skin getting dark and rusty from royal blue colour.  She cried under the tree sitting around the small bushes.

Few days later news flashed “ Blue alien structure found dead under a tree”…

‘…The world has lost its ability to appreciate things, ability to see beauty around, to be empathetic. This won’t happen if people did not speak before acknowledging things, only if they did not accepted hatred more than love and betrayal more than friendship.. ‘

This is my first short story. Hope you guys like it. Help me know about that with your views so that I can improve 🙂

It was winter season of December in Switzerland. Snow had recently stopped leaving a lovely view with trees covered with snow. This exquisite view could be seen from the window of a small cottage in the village near the mountains.

“Hey Mom! It looks like Olaf! See I’ve made it so nice, it just needs a nose”

This joyful voice was of a little kid named Timo. He was overjoyed after making his first ever snowman whom he dreamt to be alive!

Mom wore a beautiful pleasant smile on her face. Her hands were busy taking out warm and delicious cookies from the oven, just baked. She put them down and took out her gloves, handed a small carrot to Timo..

“Here you go dear, take you carrot and make you snowman’s nose. I’ll clean up here and come to see my son’s first snowman! I’ll be there in 10 minutes!” She kissed Timo’s forehead and got back to work.

She cleaned up the kitchen and did the dishes. In the meanwhile Timo settled carrot nose on his snowman’s snowy face and sat near the window staring at it, living in daydreams, playing with snowman in his dreamland..

“Lost in your dreamland, Timo? Oh! Look at that! It’s so beautiful lovely snowman! Very nice dear I am so proud of you!” Mom came in surprised to see a small snowman in the garden.

Timo was brought back from his dream land through these words. He looked up at his mom who was standing with a plate delicious cookies, Timo’s favourite flavour, Choco Almond.

He grinned and hugged his mom, grabbed a cookie and enjoyed its first bite.

“Mom this is so tasty!!”

“Yes son I made them for you. I know these ones are you favourites” Mom replied with a lovely broad smiley face

“Thank you mom! You are the best!” Timo was overjoyed and sat on the couch eating cookies.

They both settles down making themselves warm near the chimney. Mom looked up through a magazine while eating cookies while Timo still staring at his snowman through the window and lost in his daydreams.

“Mom why do we have seasons? Can’t I enjoy entire life in winter making so many snowmans?!”

Timo asked this with a sweet and serious expression. He was enjoying his favourite season holidays and never wished to go back to school.

Mom smiled and looked out of the window towards the snowy trees and beauty of the season.

“Child, nature has seasons. It is simply made in that way. In fact, everything has seasons. You see a little plant grow into a big tree. Soon you will also grow taller and become a big man”

“Yes mom! I’ll grow taller! I’ll become tall like daddy one day!” Timo exclaimed with full excitement.

“Yes child you will. Let me explain it to you. These seasons help the plant to grow. In rainy season, they get water which are absorbed by the roots and transported to all parts of plant. The autumn is the fall season, when all the leave of the trees fall down. The trees are empty! They look ugly but beautiful! Then you have spring in which trees bloom and you can see fruits, flowers and a very joyful pleasing environment. This is like achieving a great thing.

Same is with our lives dear. We have seasons which are defined by situations and our feelings. Sometimes we are happy, sometimes we are sad, sometimes we may feel overjoyed and alive, sometimes we may feel depressed but everything helps us to grow like plant. You can compare our happy times with spring, sad times with autumn and alive overjoyed times with rains, they all are connected. Each season, each feeling is important for us. It help us to learn living, help us to grow. We should just be grateful for what we have and learn from our mistakes.

“Cause seasons are meant for change

And change is meant for growth

Be grateful for every season

Imprinting life lessons in you, it goes”

Mom looked at Timo and saw him asleep on the couch. The little boy was tired after playing. She smiled and covered him with a blanket.
